Seven in the morning is a comfortable time to start our tour, which will leave from Cusco, we will have our first stop in the traditional town of Oropeza, a town that dedicated itself to making deliciously flavored breads and which are pioneers in the preparation of breads locally called Chutas, in high commercial demand in Cusco city; After this experience we will continue our trip to the town of Paucartambo through a paved road where on the way we will pass the town of Huancarani settled at border of the main route and also a few minutes away from Huancarani, we will be able to appreciate the Ausangate snow-capped which is highest in southern Peru.
Itinerary
Early in the morning we leave from Cusco towards Manu National Park. early hours of the morning we will travel from Cusco through high Andean landscapes and also visit a pre-Inca cemetery belonging to Lupaca Culture, and then we head to town of Paucartambo where We will have a stop to know a bit of this picturesque village and have a delicious breakfast on our Q'inty Nature colonial house restaurant and after we will continue our way towards to entrance to Manu National Park where we going to have an explanation about the place to which we are going to visit after this brief explanation from that point we will descend to cloud forest where we will travel in our car toward to our lodge bamboo lodge on the way we will have our lunch (similar to a picnic) and our guide will see the place where is convenient to make a walk to know a little the Cloudy Forest and have some chance to try to have some spot of some wildlife we will arrive at our lodge early in the afternoon.
Today we will make the last part of the trip in our car, on this route we will pass couple small villages (Patria and Pilcopata) where we will have a brief stop before arriving at Atalaya port, from where we embark on our motor boat and Then from here make our trip in the Madre de Dios river (in direction to river current), we will make our first stop at a point from where we are walking one-hour to small lake called Machuwasi (like a swamp) in this place there are traditional rafts make it from balsa trees that we can use to navigate, this walk also give us the chance to see the Bolivian Black-Capped squirrel Monkey and also to see the Hoatzin which is according ornithologists, a direct descendant from Archaeopteryx (first primitive bird with feathers); Interesting for its behavior and restriction to swamps and lakes of the Amazon jungle, after this we coming back to motor boat to continue our trip to Boca Manu small village.
Today we will start very early in the morning because we are going into area reserved for the tourist use in Manu National Park one-hour traveling through of Madre de Dios river and Manu river to get the forest ranger station of Limonal there we arrive to do our check-in and from there inwards we will navigate in the Manu river that is narrower than Madre de Dios river, in this part does not inhabit the local people to be protected and the animals are possible to see in the river bank like: Black Caiman, White Caiman, Capybara, Jaguar, Black-spider Monkey, Red-howler Monkey, Large-headed Capuchin Monkey, etc. And many species of birds that are located near this river this route is contact with the pristine forest in our way we are making a stop in a specific place to visit Otorongo Lake, one of the big lakes what is possible to have nice view from the view point tower of twenty five meters high located on edge of this lake.
In this part of our tour, our activities are subject to the schedules arranged by the park; so in the very early morning we could go to Salvador lake which is ten minutes by boat and twenty-five on foot to use the catamaran to try to see the Giant otters that live in this lake (they are endangered), these animals inhabit the lakes Of the Amazon jungle and only one family dominates a lake, obviously this activity is also good to continue looking for other animals like monkeys, caimans, birds, etc. After this activity we will walk along the trail that leads to our lodge and arrive for lunch.
In the afternoon we will take a walk to get a chance to see the Tschudi's woolly monkey that lives only on one side of the Manu River this trail also offers us a not disturbed jungle with many possibilities of finding wildlife and we will return to our lodge to have our dinner.
Today in the morning we will leave from the reserved area of the Manu National Park towards our next lodge and we will do it in this opportunity with stream way of the Manu river, from our lodge we will sail about five hours, that still we gives options to enjoying the nature in this part of the jungle, until leaving from the park where days before we had done our check-in, and from there we will arrive to Madre de Dios river again where we will continue our trip in direction of the stream with destiny to Our next lodge; Manu birding lodge and after occupying our rooms we will make a hike around lodge.
Very early in the morning we will leave from our lodge to Blanquillo clay lick by motor boat (in the direction of the stream) which is located one-hour far from our lodge, and from the river bank we need to walk half an hour to blind house and from where we can see the activity of the green parrots such as: Mealy Parrot, Yellow-crowned Parrot, Blue-headed Parrot, Orange-cheeked Parrot etc. And after these parrots we will have to wait about two hours for the largest macaws in the Peruvian jungle (Red-and-green Macaw) to meeting on the trees before descending to eat clay, and when they will descend we can see a colorful party in that clay wall which is located fifty meters away.
Our breakfast we are enjoying there in the blind house of Blanquillo clay lick as we observe this activity and when all this is over we will be able to return to our lodge to have our lunch, and after a good rest we will leave towards the Tapir clay lick that is located one-hour walking from our lodge, where we will wait the night and hopefully to see the largest animal in the jungle, looking for minerals that balance their digestion in this Specific point of the jungle.
We are arriving at the end our tour, today after our breakfast we can embark on our boat and continue our trip (down river) for approximately three hours until we reach the mining village of Colorado where we will farewell to our boat staff, and We keep going from here in an express car to the next stop which is the bank of other river called Inambari and after crossing this we will go to Puerto Maldonado city where we will get our last hotel and our last dinner.
